Overview
The German Swiss International School (GSIS) was founded in 1966 and was originally a Swiss school. GSIS became joint sponsorship between Germany and Switzerland and is now a recognized German School Abroad providing a bilingual education to 129 students from nursery to secondary school. GSIS follows the Thuringian curriculum in the German-speaking stream and the Cambridge Program for the English-speaking stream. Students prepare for the German equivalent of the Ordinary Level School Leaving Certificate or the Cambridge International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE). GSIS promotes holistic learning in an international, multicultural and family-like school atmosphere. GSIS has one nursery class for children aged 12 months-3 years and three kindergarten classes for children aged 3-6 years. Students are taught German and English in a bilingual setting to instill confidence and encourage successful personal and professional development. In the final year of kindergarten, children are divided into two groups for 1h preschool lessons to prepare for Class 1 either in the English or German stream. The German preschool focuses on independence, pen holding, cutting, recognizing of sounds, recognizing and naming numbers and quantities. The English preschool additionally teaches reading, writing and arithmetic. The optional Afternoon School Care is from 1-4 p.m.
